Etymology

Derived from the Persian/Dari کس (kas/kos), which entered Pashto through centuries of linguistic contact across the Iranian plateau and the Afghan-Pakistani frontier. The root is shared across several Iranian language families, including Dari, Farsi, and Balochi, pointing to a common Middle Iranian origin. In Pashto the form stabilised as کس or کوس, romanised as "kuss," and has been part of colloquial speech for many generations. It remains the most direct and taboo term for female genitalia in Pashto.

"Kuss" is considered one of the most taboo words in Pashto-speaking communities in Afghanistan and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region of Pakistan. Uttering it in mixed company or in front of elders is a serious social violation and can provoke strong reactions. It is used primarily among men in private or heated confrontational speech. The word also appears in compound insults and is frequently used to demean opponents; its shock value remains very high across both rural and urban Pashto communities.
