Etymology

Derives from the classical Persian word کیر (kir), which appears in medieval Persian literature including erotic poetry. The root is attested in Dari and Tajik as well, pointing to an ancient Iranian origin. It is among the oldest and most widespread obscene terms in the Persianate world and has no polite register — it has always been explicitly vulgar.

Cultural notes

"Kir" is the most common Farsi/Persian obscenity for the penis, deeply embedded in both everyday insults and idiomatic expressions. The phrase "be kiram" (lit. "to my dick") is the standard colloquial equivalent of "I don't care" or "fuck that," used across Iran and the diaspora. Despite its universality the word is strictly taboo in formal or mixed company and cannot appear in Iranian broadcast media.
